Every person on the academic, research and creative teams have been illustrated. This gave us the opportunity to have a consistent approach for representing each team member, a recognisable style and a simple solution for showing who has worked on particular parts of the project.
DWD is led by Sara Parker at LJMU who has an incredible devotion to utilising and celebrating creative methods of research. She has a vast network in Nepal, as she has been conducting academic research there since 1986. Sara is determined to both interact with and give back to local communities as part of the research process. This is certainly not a ‘from the sidelines’ or observer approach.
As well as drawing our team, we have used illustration as a way to portray some of the findings and individual stories without compromising ethics; often people would prefer to remain anonymous when sharing personal anecdotes and perspectives so one way to achieve this without losing the data is to use representative illustrations, rather than photography.
Dignity without Danger's varied and creative approach has lead to a vast range of outcomes through different partnerships that really benefitted from the strong visual aesthetic that I have developed to hold everything together. The iconic illustrative style and bold colour palette have played a key role.
Since 2020 we have been working to represent all the powerful work that has been done and the data collected by Dignity without Danger. What we have achieved gives us a clear visual direction going forward to capture the impact of the creative outputs and resources, including a revolutionary resource kit to be delivered to schools across the country…
All this has made for rich visual content on social media too, encouraging interaction from a diverse audience:
“It’s been amazing working with Sophie who has brought so much value to the DWD project through her design and illustrations. Being able to visualise the research findings in such a culturally appropriate way has added so much to project and enabled us to reach a wide audience.”
